Western Mebon Island, Spring 2008

Some merchants peddle goods near the boats that take you to Western Mebon Island.

One thing they were selling was roasted beetles.

They claimed that they tasted like peanuts. I wasn't about to find out if that was true.

The larger bugs look even worse.

They did have a lot of nice looking fruits though.

Looking down at boats for hire.

These small wooden boats have diesel engines.

The seating on the boat was long wooden benches.

Some children swim and play with inner tubes in the water.

More children swimming.

Children wearing life vests play in the water.

A boy poses with his inner tube in the water.

This is a picture of Hap. He was our driver and guide. He took good care of us and made sure we ate at good restaurants.

Patricia tries to take a picture of herself on the boat.

Looking out across the water.

A view of Western Mebon Island from the boat.

Another view of the island shore.

A couple people wait on a beach.

Some of the shoreline is littered with ruins.

More ruins along the shoreline.

Children in a boat.

Another picture of the children in the boat.

Docking at Western Mebon Island.

The children on the island flocked around us to try and sell their trinkets. Patricia walks with a couple children along a wall.

ray standing with two children near the boats.

In the distance you can see a hazy Angkor Wat.

A stonre on the ground that has a carved edge.

The children of the island pose with their wares.

A second pose. Of course in return they expected us to buy something (and we did).

An island beach that has stones strew across it and into the water.

More ruins on the ground. Western Mebon island had only one temple and all that's left of it is one wall.

More large stones on the ground.

This was an interesting tree that was just a tangled mess. It probably grows up into one of those giant ones that crush the temples.

More trees with stones and ruins at their base.

Small boats on the water.

A cluster of small wooden boats.

Another view of the boats.

Rubble and a partially standing wall.

Another view of a standing wall.

A closeup of the same wall.

One last picture of the same wall.

A closer look at the far side of the wall. (Those are dragonflies in the sky, not birds).

This is the interior of what was once the temple. Now it is a giant field.

A boy walks past a cow.
